A teenager who hid underwear and socks in her handbag then walked out of shops without paying for them has been fined.
Natasha Hayley Madden went on her mid-afternoon shoplifting spree in Douglas on June 27.
First on the agenda were what was described in court as three pairs of underwear, valued at £9, taken from Peacock’s and concealed in the handbag.
For the prosecution, Richard Butters said the 18-year-old then moved on to TK Maxx, where she selected two pairs of Calvin Klein socks, priced at just under £20. These were again concealed in her handbag before she left without paying.
Police later arrested her in the nearby discount shop Dealz.
’She was interviewed by police under caution and she fully admitted what she had done,’ Mr Butters said.
Madden, of Alder Road, Pulrose, admitted two offences of theft.
Defending her, advocate Louise Cooil stressed the low value of the items taken.
She said Madden had a troubled past but had made great headway recently.
’She has started to make her own way in the world. She was working and getting on better with her family. But she badly broke her leg, as a result of which she was signed off work and she has allowed her life to slide in the meantime,’ she said.
’She has fallen out with her family again and fallen into the trap of shoplifting. She was instantly remorseful.’
The stolen items were all recovered, she told the court.
Passing sentence, magistrates’ chairman Carol Maddrell told Madden: ’The value of the goods was not high, but along with your existing record it’s not impressive reading.’
She was fined £100 in total but was excused any prosecution costs.
