Three of the Isle of Man’s leading cyclists will tackle the Spring Classic this weekend when the Milan-San Remo takes place in Italy.
Manx Missile Mark Cavendish plus island residents Ben Swift and Ian Stannard lead the British charge for the 108th edition of la classica di primavera, the longest one-day stage race in professional cycling at 293 kilometres in length.
Cav will be hoping to add to his memorable victory in 2009 when he leads Team Dimension Data in Saturday’s race alongside fellow Britons Stephen Cummings and Scott Thwaites.
Onchan resident Swift has some pedigree in this race as well, claiming superb third and second place finishes in 2014 and 2016 respectively, therefore he will be going all out to claim a maiden win in the prestigious event in his first year for UAE Team Emirates.
Castletown’s Stannard is one of two Brits in Team Sky’s eight-strong squad for the Spring Classic alongside regular island visitor Luke Rowe, although he is likely to be playing a supporting role to the likes of Elia Viviani or Michal Kwiatkowski.
