Doyle making his mark at Swope Park Rangers

Manx footballer Liam Doyle is enjoying a good start to life at Swope Park Rangers in America.

The former St George’s and St Mary’s player signed for the Kansas-based USL side in December following a successful season with the Harrisburg City Islanders in Pennsylvania.

Beaten finalists in last season’s USL Cup, Rangers are affiliated to Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City and begin their league season on March 26 against OKC Energy FC.

As such, the club’s pre-season is now well underway and Doyle is happy with how things have gone so far:

’I’m settling in very well so far, the club and facilities are first class.

’Everything is calculated so it’s the perfect environment and everything you’d want as a footballer.

’The coaches are very good, demand a lot from the players but everything is heavily football-based, working daily on the style of play.

’The standard is good. It’s a young group, but a very talented group.’

Doyle has wasted little time in making an impression at his new club, scoring his side’s first goal of pre-season as they romped to a 5-0 victory over University of Missouri Kansas City.

The versatile centre-back - who can also play in midfield - volleyed home superbly in the 23rd minute to open the scoring for Rangers at Swope Soccer Village.

’It was good to score. It was always nice to score especially because it’s been so long.

’But it’s been even better being back training everyday and getting match minutes under my belt.’

Doyle and his team-mates now travel to Indiana this week to play Indy Eleven of the North American Soccer League before taking on Indiana University on Sunday.
