Sean Doyle has been named as the Canada Life Premier League Player of the Month for January.
The towering centre-forward enjoyed a sublime month in front of goal for Corinthians as he helped his side claim victories over St Mary’s and Ayre United to maintain a top-four position.
Doyle bagged a superb hat-trick against rivals St Mary’s at the Bowl as the Whites claimed a 3-2 win at the national stadium, before putting already-relegated Ayre to the sword with a seven-goal haul in Andreas during the Ballafletcher side’s 14-1 demolition.
As such, the frontman claimed back-to-back man of the match awards when impressing Eric Clague’s ratings panel to garner a monthly score of seven points.
In doing so, he also took his seasonal tally to 22 goals which puts him joint second which Chris Bass Jr in the Golden Boot standings.
Half a point behind the Island Games basketballer is St John’s stalwart defender Nick Leung. The centre-back helped the Mullen-Cloie outfit record victories over Ayre and Colby - including a clean sheet in the latter - as well as inspiring his side to a dogged 1-0 defeat at the hands of newly-crowned champions St George’s.
Therefore, his score of 6.5 points was enough to hold off the aforementioned Bass Jr and Liam Cowin who finished joint third in the monthy standings.
Bass’s superb season continues to go from strength-to-strength as he proved pivotal in guiding St George’s towards a record-breaking seventh league title in a row and a 12th in 14 years, reaction to which appears in this week’s Manx Independent.
Bass Jr also has his say on Geordies’ incredible success in next Tuesday’s Isle of Man Examiner.
As a result of his six points for January, Bass now lies two points clear of St Mary’s defender Karl Clark in the overall race to be crowned Gordon Clague Football Writers’ Player of the Year.
His former Glencrutchery Road team-mate Cowin has also enjoyed a fine month at Rushen United, helping the Spaniards record comprehensive wins over Union Mills and Ayre before pushing Geordies all the way in a five-goal thriller at Glencrutchery Road.
Completing the top five in the monthly rankings is Cowin’s ex-team-mate Sean Quaye who impressed at the back for StGeorge’s during their wins over Ramsey, St John’s and Rushen, including grabbing a goal against Ramsey.
Claiming the Young Player of the Month award for January is Quaye’s former Geordies colleague Ryan Gartland who enjoyed an excellent month up front for Douglas Athletic, helping the newly-promoted side cement their place in the top flight for next season with fine perfomances against Laxey and Ramsey and claiming 3.5 ranking points in the process.
